SIMPLE SYRUPS

Simple syrup is an essential ingredient in cocktails and other beverages like iced coffee because it blends so well with other liquids, and it’s super easy to make yourself.

This syrup is the go-to for adding sweetness to cold drinks where sugar wouldn’t dissolve properly. It's neutral in flavor, meaning it sweetens without overpowering. It’s versatile, and essential for popular cocktails.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 part (by volume) white granulated sugar

  • 1 part (by volume) water

PREPARATION

  1. Add sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Let simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes. Careful not to boil.

  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

  4. Store in a sealed glass jar or other airtight container and chill completely before mixing into cocktails.

  5. Keep refrigerated. Use within one month.

VARIATIONS

There an innumerable variations on simple syrup - several of which we have on this site, but here are several standard variations:

Rich Simple Syrup - use 2 parts sugar to one part water

Demerara Syrup - use Demerara sugar instead of white granulated sugar. Demerara sugar is a raw cane sugar with natural molasses flavor and larger crystals, giving the syrup a beautiful amber tone and a subtle depth of flavor.
